School Based Internship Application and Requirement Deadlines

*These dates are provided for planning purposes and to help ensure school internships are coordinated smoothly with our partner divisions.

**Best practice is to apply as soon as you are qualified, some districts have earlier deadlines. Out-of-state placements can take 6-8 months to finalize and are not guaranteed**

School-Based Internship Requirements

By the eligibility deadline for a school-based internship (student teaching), you must have the following completed and on file*:

  • Student Teaching Application
  • Acceptance into Teacher Preparation
  • Background Check
  • Required Certifications
  • Minimum GPA Requirement
  • All Coursework and Grades (including CLEP scores; exceptions only for courses currently in progress)
  • Official Transcripts
  • Official Test Scores

How to Check Your Eligibility:

  • Use DegreeWorks and/or Leo Online Test Scores to verify what requirements are on file in our office.
  • If certifications or test scores are missing, email them to oce@odu.edu.
    • Include your UIN in the subject line of your email.

Important Notes:

  • No exceptions will be made after the published due dates.
  • Some majors have additional requirements not included on this list; it is meant to be used as an example.

  1. Confirmation
    • You will receive a confirmation email once your application is accepted.
  2. Orientation Course
    • After the internship request dealing for the semester, you will be added to a Canvas Student Teaching Orientation Course
    • It is your responsibility to routinely check the course for important updates and opportunities (scholarships, job postings, etc.)
  3. Mandatory Orientation Meeting
    • You are required to attend a synchronous Mandatory Orientation meeting approximately two weeks before the start of student teaching.
  4. Official Placement   
    • Once you are qualified to begin student teaching, the Office of Clinical Experiences will send the official placement information to:
      • The student teacher
      • The University Supervisor
      • The clinical faculty

Required Assessments

All candidates are must complete the Virginia Board of Education prescribed assessments with passing scores.

Clearance Background Checks

All candidates are required to complete the ³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ Field Experience Clearance Procedures prior to the Orientation. This process takes eight weeks to complete.

Other Requirements

  • ALL course work, content knowledge and professional education as listed in your curriculum, must be completed prior to the orientation;
  • ALL GPA and grades requirements must be met as listed in your curriculum; and
  • Transcripts from external institutions documenting completion of required courses.

Important Dates

Fall – School internships will start the first day of school after Labor Day

Spring -  School Internships will start the first day of school after Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
